Virechana is a pradhan karma among panchkarma. This is performed after proper internal (स्नेहपानम) & external oleation (अभ्यंगम & स्वेदनम). This is an ayurvedic therapy in which medicated purgations are induced in an individual. This is termed as best treatment for vitiated pitta dosha in the body, which usually gets accumulated in the liver & gall bladder. It cleanses the gastro-intestinal tract. Though the procedure is safe it shall be performed under the supervision of a doctor.
